The 2014 Pinewood Derby is approaching. Please see your Den Leader to get a free car kit for your Scout. See Matt Putman at a Den/Pack Meeting or go to the Pinewood Derby Workshop if you want to purchase an additional kit ($5) for siblings or parents.
Pinewood Derby Champ Camp is Saturday, January 11 from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM at the Loveland Scout Shop at the Outlets at Loveland (5604 McWhinney Blvd). This optional event is sponsored by BSA Long’s Peak Council and is an opportunity to learn speed secrets, try out precision tools and track-test your design. This is not a workshop to build your car, but rather a chance to learn more about making a fast car. Contact the Loveland Scout Shop with any questions about this event: 970-203-9530
The Pinewood Derby Workshop will be held Saturday, February 22 from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at JNC Contractors in Laporte (address below). This is an optional workshop where you and your Scout can build your car. Bring your design plans and your car kit. Tools will be provided and extra car kits will be available for purchase. Pinewood Derby Rules are here: http://www.longspeakbsa.org/CacheLaPoudre/events/pinewood.html. Parents must accompany their kids to the workshop and only parents are allowed to use power tools at the workshop.
The Pinewood Derby Check-in is Thursday, March 6 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at First United Methodist Church (FUMC). Just drop-in anytime between 6 and 8. Cars will be inspected to make sure that they meet the size, weight and other requirements as described in the Rules. We will take photos of the Scouts and their cars. All cars must be checked in this night or they will not race.
The Pinewood Derby Race is Saturday, March 8 from 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM at FUMC. There will be three different groups: Open Class, Tigers Cubs and the rest of the Cub Scouts. The Open Class consists of parents and siblings and will race first. There are no trophies for Open Class and there is also no weight limit for Open Class. Tiger Cubs will race second and will receive Speed and Show trophies that are separate from the other Scouts. The rest of the Cub Scouts will race last in order of age: Wolves, Bears, Webelos I, and then Webelos II. Show trophies include: Best of Show, Way Cool Dude, Best Scout Theme, Most Original, Best Paint Job and Best Do-It-Yourself. In addition to these Pack Awards, there will also be trophies for the fastest car in each Den. Please note that there is a maximum of one trophy per Scout, so boys will only receive the highest priority trophy earned.
Scouts should wear their uniform for Check-in and Race Day.
